Founded in 1999, Smart Construction, Inc. is a locally owned and operated construction company in Shelby, NC, led by Matthew Smart. What began as a passion for design and craftsmanship has grown into one of the area’s most trusted names in home building and renovation.

We are licensed, bonded and insured in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Education

A graduate of Shelby High School and North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Matthew began his career in commercial construction, working for companies across North and South Carolina. His engineering background gives him a technical edge—combining precision, efficiency, and creativity in every project.

Residential Construction

In the late ’90s, Matthew discovered his true calling: residential construction. Building custom homes allowed him to merge design innovation with hands-on craftsmanship, helping families create spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. For Matthew, every home is a blank canvas—an opportunity to bring someone’s vision to life through thoughtful design and meticulous detail.

Commitment to High Construction Standards

Today, Smart Construction continues to uphold that same commitment to quality, integrity, and collaboration that started it all. Matthew resides in Shelby, NC, with his wife and they have two children.

Their son, Tate, has recently joined the family business and will be helping to continue the future legacy of Smart Construction by providing the same level of high-quality construction services to residential clients. Just like Matthew, Tate also has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from N.C. State.
